No. 1 for at least 8 cellos (1930–38) Villa-Lobos did not set out to create the Bachianas brasileiras: they evolved, like the Chôros, out of biological and historical necessity. This evolution was typical of the chaotic production of the composer, and an examination of the cycle’s chronology and origins shows an uncoordinated journey of leaps and bounds rather than a well-ordered ‘Musical Offering’. The three passions of Heitor Villa-Lobos’s life come together in his Bachianas Brasileiras: Bach, Brazil, and the cello. So it’s not surprising that he struck gold with this elegant, evocative piece, which combines all three and quickly became his most performed work. In his nine Bachianas Brasileiras, written between 1930 and 1945, Heitor Villa-Lobos sought to fuse the soul of his native Brazil with the spirit of Johann Sebastian Bach, a composer he venerated. The collection contains five of the Bachianas Brasileiras, including the most famous, written for soprano and eight cellos, which features the delectably floating tones of Victoria de los Angeles.
